Performing Federico Garcia Lorca in the UK
Project Group: Sophie Apthorp, Isabel Atkins, George Humphreys and Catherine Sharp
This presentation will be about the Spanish writer and poet Federico Garcia Lorca, a hugely influential figure, both in Spain and globally. Our research, led by our project leader Maria Bastianes, is focused on his work that has been performed in the UK. We have been compiling data from newspaper archives to create a database which will present all the times Lorca’s work has ever been performed in this country, eventually aiming to be released for the use of researchers. Our presentation will cover our research process and how this project has opened our eyes to a wonderful writer.
Leeds’ Lost Artefacts: Wet Specimens
Project group: Lily Sheridan, Megan George, Oscar Irvine, Sophie Bradbury.
The History, Science and Technology Museum at the University of Leeds is a lost treasure trove of artefacts and weird objects. We delve into the strange collection of Wet Specimens in our research project, hoping to shine a light on their conservation, history and ethics to produce a range of outcomes to showcase the objects and help bring them back from the dark, unknown world of the museum store room.
Black Orpheus - Nigerian Poetry of the Civil War
Project Group: Hannah Yeboah, Ellie Gorton, Rachel Green
This presentation will detail the research we've conducted into the poetry emerging from the Black Orpheus magazine circa the time of the Nigerian civil war. Cooperating with the university's special collections department, we have analyzed the literature published by influential poets in the editions before, during, and after the civil war in order to study the progression of thoughts and ideas at the time. This presentation will detail our research further, and introduce the poetry event we are holding to celebrate the forgotten literature.
LS6: Local History in the Community
Project Group: Ella Womack, Maya Mindham and Tiphaine Haque
This presentation will delve into our research project, which explores the history of our shared local community, LS6. We will highlight our aims, objectives and give you a taste of our final output. We present this project to you in partnership with The Leeds Central Library and we hope to entice you to explore the rich resources available there.
Who is International?
Project Group: Chloe Flowers, Alex McManus, Evelina Ersgard, Flora Campbell, Mia Caldwell
We are looking at experiences of international students here at Leeds, what the university does to support them and how they may be able to help. We have also been looking at integration and how that may differ from UK.
Globalising 20th century women’s stories in science and technology
Project Group: Maeve Gallagher, Maddie Barnes, Charlotte Tickel, Jessica Graas, Elsie Wood-Downie and Grace Evans
Working with the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists our project focuses on retelling the stories for women in STEM. We want to acknowledge the social stigmatisation for women going into these careers. We will achieve this through interviewing INWES members to create a podcast aimed at a wide range of ages to raise awareness of these inspiring stories.
Education Support for Refugees and Asylum Seekers
Project Group: Lucy Armstrong, Jess Cropley, Jess Morris and Beth Irving. Asumani Susho and Cole Holmes from Leeds Beckett University are also working in this project.
This project aims to create an accessible online resource that outlines the education stages in England to help refugees and asylum seekers in navigating the education system. We have finished the website draft and are currently visiting community groups to promote its use and gain feedback. It is a collaboration between University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett students, suggested as useful by Leeds Asylum Seekers’ Support Network (LASSN) and the University of Sanctuary team at the University of Leeds.
