Religion & Feminism

There is a perception, that both Religion and Feminism cannot be mutually exclusive. There is reservation as to whether the interpretation of texts and their influence on societies have created patriarchal tendencies which suggest that being both feminist and religious is incompatible. I’d like to present interesting issues to explore and show different ways that the two intersect. I’d like to explore how many feminists have used and criticised the Bible, for example, Mary Daly or Kate Millett, to show that Christianity and its widespread influence have had detrimental impacts on women. I Will then like to explore how some argue that Religion and Feminism are well minded, for instance through scholars such as Kathleen Mcphillips who see the Bible as a liberating force and promote concepts such as anti-essentialism.
