Coding children’s responses on tests of language ability
As part of the ESRC-funded project How to promote children's language development using family-based shared book reading, I am looking for up to 3 students to assist with coding children’s responses during experimental testing sessions. We are using the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF-4 UK) to measure the language abilities of 120 four-year-olds in our sample, and an additional bespoke language test to further measure their communicative abilities.
Your task will be to watch videos of children taking the tests and code their responses on score sheets. Full training will be given. To maintain participant confidentiality, the work
will take place in the linguistics department, mainly during the Easter vacation.
Start Date: w/c 20th March 2017
End Date: 21st April 2017.
Hours: between 3 and 12 per week (negotiable)
Number of possible students: 3
Likely outcomes:
- Insight into experimental research in language acquisition
- Familiarity with standardised tests of language ability (the CELF is used widely in research and in clinical practice, i.e. Speech and Language Therapy)
- Practice with Excel for data entry
Relevant fields of linguistics:
- Language acquisition
- Psycholinguistics
