Event title: Manuscript Sleuthing: An Introduction to Invisible Agents
Speaker:Nadine Akkerman

This seminar was most useful for me in giving me confidence going into my dissertation research. I am working with manuscripts from a similar period, though thankfully not in code, and Nadine’s confidence and careful work with the manuscripts was inspiring. Also, it was reassuring to hear that transcribing manuscripts is a painstaking task for everyone, even experienced historians! The content of the seminar was incredibly interesting for me as I have read Stephen Alford’s work on Walsingham’s (male) spy networks, but knew nothing about espionage during the Civil War. Thus, not only did this offer an enlightening comparison in terms of gender, but also in terms of time period. Overall this was a very interesting seminar, and I look forward to attending the rest of the IREMS series.
