The role of variation in speech processing: recruitment and annotation

As part of the research project “The role of regional and social variation in speech processing”, I am looking for up to 2 students to assist with participant recruitment and speech annotation. We are currently running a study collecting eye-tracking and production data.

Task 1: To help identify and contact eligible participants (October-November).

Task 2: To help with speech annotation (November-December).

This task will involve using a Forced Aligner to automatically segment and label speech, hand-correcting automatic annotations and annotating certain parts of speech (e.g., vowels) manually. Full training will be provided.

Relevant fields of linguistics:

  • Sociophonetics
  • Phonetics

Student profile:

  • Expertise required in PRAAT

Anticipated skills to be gained:

  • Experience with recruiting participants for experimental studies.
  • Experience using a forced aligner for automatic segmentation and labelling of speech signals.
  • Practice annotating speech using Praat

Start date: w/c 14 October

End date: End of Semester 1

Hours per week: 2-6
