Why would students want to participate in the scheme?

There are several reasons why the scheme would be beneficial to students. Some students may choose to participate to gain authentic research experience. Improving specific research skills such as designing methodology, literature review skills and analytical skills may be the reason why a student would participate. Other students may use the scheme to test whether postgraduate study such as a Master’s degree or PhD is a suitable option for them. Finally, some students might participate to strengthen their interests in the subject and relish the increased contact time with the staff in the department

Who should apply?

If the student has an interest or subject knowledge in any of the projects advertised, then this student would be encouraged to apply.

Does the scheme have course credits?

No, the scheme does not form part of a degree programme. The scheme aims to provide additional experience which may prove useful in their future studies.

Can students apply for more than one project?

Yes, it is possible to apply for more than one project. For example, if a student is unsuccessful in their application for one project, they can apply for future projects. However, it would be inadvisable to be involved with more than one project at one time so that study time for degree programmes are unaffected and the student has more focus and dedication to one single project

Are students paid for participation?

No, participation within the scheme is completely voluntary. It is hoped that the experience will aid the student’s profile for future study e.g. the final year project or for future work experience

What is expected of the student?

The student involved in the scheme will agree to a contract with the supervisor of the project on which they are accepted. The contract will detail the specific hours and tasks required in the project. In general, it is expected that students are conscientious, reliable and independent to ensure that the project runs smoothly and is a success for both the student and the member of staff.

What is expected of the member of staff?

The supervising member of staff is expected to fully brief the student on the background to the topic and provide sufficient training of the procedures to be performed. In addition, the supervisor will respond to queries and provide any support necessary during the project. Similar to the student, the supervisor will have to agree to the terms stated in the contract in regards to contact time and correspondence. The supervisor could be contacted to provide a reference for the student, however, this is at the discretion of the supervisor.

What happens if a student wants to withdraw during the project?

The scheme is intended to be a positive experience for both student and supervisor. Therefore, if the student feels that they cannot continue with the project due to personal or study commitments, the supervisor should be informed promptly and the student will be released from the project. Withdrawal from the scheme will not affect the student’s degree and time in the department, however the student will not receive a certificate as this is only obtained upon completion of the project.
